How To Complete The Officer On Deck Quest

Fallout 76 Whitespring Bunker On The Map

Travel to the Whitespring Bunker's Military Wing, where MODUS will be waiting for you. Your goal is to gain access to the Command Wing of the Whitespring Bunker, but you first need to earn ten commendations and present them to MODUS for your promotion. Upon gaining the ten commendations, your character will become a General and you'll have full access to the Command Wing, which is your character's ultimate goal in this mission.

Earning ten commendations isn't too challenging, but it does require some grinding. You can earn commendations through the same task multiple times, so there are methods that are faster than others if you want to complete this objective as quickly as possible.

Some methods are better while you're adventuring alone, while others are easier with a group of players. Below you can find every way to earn these commendations, along with the easiest method.

The "Officer On Deck" mission ends upon earning ten commendations.

Option One: Defeat Scorchbeasts

Fallout 76 Scorchbeast With A Mountain In The Background

The first and quickest method you can use to earn commendations in Fallout 76 is by defeating Scorchbeasts. This path is the easiest because of how common Scorchbeasts are, in addition to the fact that each one you defeat awards one commendation.

Scorchbeasts are capable of flight and are often flying above you during a fight. As such, it's advantageous to bring a ranged weapon to fight these creatures. Melee and unarmed weapons are nearly impossible to use effectively against a Scorchbeast.

On the other hand, these beasts are quite powerful compared to other Wasteland enemies, so you need powerful gear to take them on. This may include a set of power armor if you're challenging these creatures by yourself.

Additionally, having multiple players by your side while fighting a Scorchbeast will make killing them much easier and faster. If you encounter a Scorchbeast that other players are fighting, you only need to get a single hit on it for the defeat to count for a commendation.

The easiest method for farming Scorchbeast kills is by traveling to Fort Defiance, which is on the map below, and completing the "Line In The Sand" quest multiple times until you defeat ten Scorchbeasts. Each instance of this repeatable mission will spawn two to three Scorchbeasts, so this is a quick way to earn your commendations.

To start the "Line In The Sand" quest, you need to interact with the terminal behind the ASAM in Fort Defiance's Courtyard upon the event becoming active. Initiate the pre-op checks after activating the terminal, and your mission will begin.

However, there are also a few other ways of reliably encountering Scorchbeasts, which we'll list below.

  • Scorchbeasts are common at Fissure Sites.
  • Scorchbeats Spawn during the "Surface To Air" quest.

Option Two: Complete Enclave Events

Enclave events manifest in many different ways throughout Fallout 76, so it's good to know each way to earn commendations by completing them. There are always active events on your world map, so simply open it in your menu and search for icons such as the yellow indicator on the map above. Once you reach the marker, you can begin the event mission.

Check your map regularly if you want to stay updated on the newest events on your server.

Enclave events are fairly difficult to complete alone; however, they're manageable by yourself and easy with a team of a few players. You'll encounter peaceful objectives within Enclave events, along with goals that involve combat. Make sure to prepare for these challenging missions with healing supplies and a strong gear setup. Bring a powerful ranged weapon in case it's too dangerous to get in close proximity to an enemy.

The number of commendations you earn for each event quest varies. Each of the following quests is born from an Enclave event, so they're all worth completing if you run into them. These event quests are repeatable, so you can use this method to farm commendations swiftly.

  • The "Bots On Parade" quest grants you one commendation upon completion.
  • The "Dropped Connection" quest grants you one commendation upon completion.
  • The "A Real Blast" quest grants two commendations upon completion.

Option Three: Defeat Legendary Creatures

Fallout 76 Legendary Glowing Mole Miner Fighting The Player

Legendary enemies are much more powerful than regular foes, although they're still manageable to fight by yourself in most cases. Many creatures within Fallout 76 can be legendary, which means that you can encounter them in any location throughout the Wasteland.

You'll know an enemy is legendary because it will have a star icon next to its health bar. You earn one commendation for each one or two-star enemy you defeat and two commendations for each three-star enemy you kill. The more stars the enemy has, the stronger they'll be to beat.

Make sure you have lots of healing items and ammo ready if you're seeking out legendary enemies since they're more durable and deal extra damage. You may also want to wear a suit of power armor if your character has low health or resistances.

Although you can encounter legendary enemies anywhere in Fallout 76, they're quite rare compared to standard enemies. As such, you'll want to seek them out if you're going with this method to obtain your commendations.

There are a few possible methods you can employ to increase your chance of encountering legendary creatures, such as completing specific missions. Each method is listed below.

  • The "Awol Armaments" quest has a high chance of spawning legendary enemies.
  • The "Monster Mash" quest has a high chance of spawning legendary enemies.
  • All horde events have a high chance of spawning legendary enemies.
